The agreements for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the Ionian Sea and Crete, with the participation of energy giants like ExxonMobil and Chevron, signal a new phase in the deepening of bilateral relations. However, behind the narrative of strategic alliance, questions arise about who ultimately benefits — and what the real limits of Greek geopolitical autonomy are within this web of interests. The entry of ExxonMobil and Chevron into the Greek energy market is neither accidental nor exclusively economic. The US is seeking a stable, Western pillar in the Eastern Mediterranean, capable of functioning as an energy hub for the channeling of hydrocarbons to Europe. Greece, with its geographical position and political stability, constitutes the ideal candidate.
